BP Chemical
The BP Amoco Heritage plant produces of purified terephthalic acid (PTA), a chemical feedstock used primarily to make polyester products. Located on the Cooper River just outside Charleston, S.C., the plant's two big units produce 1.25 million tons of PTA a year, making it the largest plant of its kind in the U.S.
Built in 1976-77, the Amoco heritage plant has been a testing ground for PTA technology ever since it opened in 1978. While most of Cooper River's customers are in the United States, some product is exported to Asia, Europe and South Africa.
BP's PTA technology has been at the forefront of the polyester industry for over 40 years. Our technology allows us to produce high quality PTA at low cost. BP has set high standards of product quality, reliability, customer focus, operation safety and environmental friendliness, making PTA a preferred raw material for most polyester uses.
